DRAMATURGY & STORY

What is the storyline of Green Day's American Idiot stage musical?

Developed by Billie Joe Armstrong and Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), the rock opera follows three disaffected suburban youths — Johnny (the self-styled “Jesus of Suburbia”), Tunny, and Will. While Will stays behind in Jingletown with his pregnant girlfriend Heather, Johnny plunges into big-city temptation under the alter-ego St. Jimmy and falls for Whatsername, while Tunny enlists in the military and is wounded in combat.
ORCHESTRATION & SOUND

Who arranged Green Day's punk rock albums for the theatre stage?

Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) crafted the theatrical orchestrations and vocal arrangements, combining driving electric guitars, bass, and punk drums with string counter-melodies and multi-part ensemble harmonies across every track of American Idiot and selections from 21st Century Breakdown.
